What quinceañera means and where it came from?
Quinceañera (also fiesta de quinceañera, quince años, fiesta de quince años, quinceañero and quinces) is a celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, which can also be that of a boy, but is more popularly celebrated for a girl. It has pre-Columbian roots in Mexico and is widely celebrated by girls throughout Latin America. The girl celebrating her 15th birthday is a quinceañera (Spanish pronunciation: [kinseaˈɲeɾa]; feminine form of "quinceañera"). In Spanish, and in Latin America, the term quinceañera is reserved only for the honoree; in English, mainly in the United States, the term is used to refer to the celebrations and honours surrounding the occasion.
Historically, in the years leading up to her fifteenth birthday, the older women in her community would teach the girl child how to cook, weave and bear children in preparation for her future role as a wife. During the celebration, the girl's father would introduce her to potential suitors
In the past, parallel customs could be found in Europe. Today, the custom is still strongest in Mexico, its probable country of introduction during the viceregal or Mexican imperial periods. However, it is widely celebrated in the Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas. The grandest celebrations are comparable to British and American debutante balls. Celebrations vary greatly from country to country; for example, in some countries they have taken on more religious connotations than in others. Today, the quinceañera is also celebrated by many Latin Americans in the United States, each according to their own traditions.
In Lusophone Brazil, a similar celebration is called festa de debutantes, baile de debutantes or festa de quinze anos. In the French Caribbean and French Guiana, it is called fête des quinze ans.
